Every year brings the holiday season and the weird, wacky, and wonderful moments that go with it. Instead of reading any articles this week, we will read about each other's favorite (or least favorite or anything in between) holiday moments.

Every holiday has it’s own special traditions but for thanksgiving my traditions are different. First off I awake from a tight slumber and carry myself down the stairs. As I go to sit on the couch my cousin screams in my face that I’m a buttface. I push her to the floor and reclaim my peace. I sit and wait for the wondrous breakfast. Later on my glorious morning I tune in and watch the thanksgiving day parade. My young cousins watch in amazement as snoopy of some character rolls thru the t.v. screen. By now we are all stuffed with the breakfast my mother made. We tune in as whole family to watch the Westminster Dog show. trust me we don’t watch t.v. all day. Later on in the day my dad and I go to the park to play football with the Surkamer’s and the Dobbin’s we play and play till we are all bruised up. By now it is getting dark and my family and I drive over to my grandma and grandfather’s house. We meet our whole entire family at their house. We all sit down at the holy dinner table and prepare for a feast. Soon enough we dig in. We eat and eat until it is time to go and watch some football. By then my older cousins and my uncle are doing crazy things. They all go outside and grab the golf cart and drive it around while they’re barley able to walk do to the bud lights they have consumed. The day is coming to a close and my family departures back to our house before the enviornment becomes too dangerous. I sneak to stay at the house and enjoy a night of thanks with my drunken cousins that I love.

Christmas is my favorite holiday ever!!!! I love every bit of Christmas there is. From the holiday music on 93.9, snow/cold weather, candy canes in stockings, presents from Santa, to the smell of the air Christmas makes me feel happy. My family is a very big into Christmas so of course it has passed down to my sister and I. Every Christmas when we are at our house my sister sleeps in my room. We usually stay up all night so that at 2:30 in the morning we wake up. And at this time we sneak down to our family room with flashlights. As we reach the Christmas tree we see the presents lined up all around the room. Immediately we search for our presents and check to see if they are what we wanted. After a few minutes we creep back upstairs to try and go back asleep thinking of what was in those boxes we just saw.

I haven't really had any exciting holiday moments but there's one that I thought was a little funny. It was New Year's Eve and I was staying at a hotel with my sister, her boyfriend, my brother, my friend, and my friend's brother. At first, I thought I was going to be staying at home for New Year’s but my mom told me it was an adult party for her and my dad. I was disappointed when I found out but it turned out I had loads of fun anyway. We went swimming, rode on the luggage cart, had a bunch of snacks, and played a lot of games. This was about two or three years ago. Back then, my friend and her brother talked too much. It was annoying but they calmed down for the night. It was the first year I wasn’t able to do the countdown with my family and was a little upset about that. When the final ten seconds came to the countdown though, I called my mom and we did it together. It was funny because one of us was ahead of the other but we still kept going and had a great time.

My least favorite dish on Thanksgiving is the turkey. Its not that I don’t like it, it’s just that I think it’s kind of bland. I know that everyone thinks that turkey is the star, but I just don’t really find it that great. I mean, what about the mashed potatoes, or the stuffing, I think they’re much yummier. I always make a little lake in my mashed potatoes for the gravy, it’s pretty amazing. There’s the pumpkin pie too! That’s definitely a contender for best dish. My mom also makes chocolate pecan pie which is really good as well. And it’s not that the turkey isn’t prepared well. My grandpa makes it and he’s a really good chef. Last year I tried to help him make it, but it kind of grossed me out, which is ironic because my grandpa is a vegetarian.`On a whole, I really like Thanksgiving, and look forward to being with my family, but the turkey isn’t my favorite part.

I don’t get to see my dad often, and especially quality time when he isn’t doing hw for college. But when I get to see him I like to make it last. Every thanksgiving we switch off who get’s thanksgiving with us, my mom or my dad. Last year I spent my thanksgiving with my dad. I was expecting just some turkey while we watch a movie, but it was something I didn’t expect. As we drove over to my dad’s house I was getting hungry. My dad was in the kitchen preparing the turkey. Once the turkey was done we all sat down at the newly decorated table. I was amazed, there was a beautiful turkey, stuffing, corn muffins, cranberry jam and a whole table of steaming meals. We ate up and got stuffed. This was the best thanksgiving I’ve had because it was quality time and it was a great meal. My mom’s thanksgivings were different she wasn’t traditional, but she was all about getting good deals and not wasting food. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. The thing I like about having two different types of thanksgivings, is that I get a change in styles. But in the end I like my dad’s thanksgivings better.

A few years ago on a rainy Thanksgiving my oven broke because my mom tried to clean it. We had a small oven that would fit everything but the turkey. My dad and I drove for about an hour until we found an open shop that sold something to cook our turkey in.

Advice- never go to Walmart on Black Friday. Never. It is suicide. Last year my dad and I went to Walmart on Thanksgiving, since it opened at 10. The place was packed. We just wanted to go there and get a new Wii because my sister had broke our old one. Now, my grandparents live in rural Dixon; a town that has been plagued with fast food restaurants and corn fields, and Walmart is the only place to get actual food. So it’s Black Friday, and we show up at 9:45, so we can get a good spot in line for the Wii’s. It’s completely packed in there, and I can see two people arguing about something already. My dad and I just want a Wii, so we grab it quickly and get harassed by some people because we got the last blue one. We scurry out and into a mob of farmers and teenagers in a yelling fest by the Xbox games. My dad was probably wondering who got hurt, while I was wondering what farmer plays Xbox. We avoided the mob and paid ($80!), and got in the car, hoping to be in time for Grandma’s apple pie.

I think the worst experience I ever had for Thanksgiving was at my grandmother’s house. It was the rare occasion where no one was late, mad at each other, and etc. Which means everyone was there: and it was a little packed. It was then that I first realized the odd eating habits of my father’s family. The worst was my uncle, who mixes all of his food together. Of course, he began right after I had gotten my food. I remember staring in horror and revulsion as he spooned the cranberry sauce into his “mixture”. I shuddered as he moved his fork around in a circle, mixing them together. I wanted to look away, but the sight of him adding even more substances held my gaze. I will never get over the outcome of his “mix”. There were flecks of red cranberry, chunks of stuffing, white, creamy spots of mash potatoes, and other ingredients that I just couldn’t recognize. It was terrifying, simply terrifying.

There are always three foods I especially look out for on our table. I'll start with Brussels sprouts. Most kids cringe at the sound of them. You know what? I’m completely okay with that. More for me! It wasn’t always like that, though. At first, I didn’t like them at all. Countless other children had told me they were icky and gross, and I couldn’t even fathom putting one in my mouth, much less actually swallowing one of the darn things. So for years, I politely passed the bowl on to the next human being (if it was my brother or cousins, the bowl would be passed again until they landed on a grown-up’s plate). One year, this all changed. I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but I discovered the wonderful flavor and texture of the Brussels sprout. My parents cook them in such a way that they’re a little, teensy bit burnt so you get the caramelized flavor, and I believe they sauté them with onions and I think seeds of some sort. I don’t really worry about how they get on my plate; I just make sure they do. The same thing with spinach, but that’s a different story altogether.
Michelle T.
11/20/2012 12:49:50 am
I love brussels sprouts also! I used to feel the same way about them—I mean, if no one else likes them why would I? And then I tried them for the first time. Yum. And I think my mom makes it the same way because I totally know what you're talking about!

When it comes to long holiday breaks I am a big fan, especially winter breaks. Because I live across the street from the school, I have easy access to the outdoor ice rink, where I spend most of my time. Thankfully, my over protective mom trusts me to stay over there for hours. The pond isn’t the only reason I like winter break so much. A big part of why I like winter break is the snow. One of my favorite things to do in life is explore new places, and when the town gets covered in snow it looks and feels like a new place. This not only makes playing in the snow fun, but interesting as well because everything seems new to you.

There it was. The long table of tender meat, vegetable casseroles, creamy mashed potatoes, cranberry salad, pumpkin pie, and much more. I’m standing in line, planning what’s going to be put on my plate. That’s when some horizantally-challenged person in front of me blocks my precious view. He certainly takes his time. I’ve been waiting all day for this. How long can a guy take to choose between dark turkey and white turkey? If only I had gotten in the line thirty seconds earlier. Sigh.

Thanksgiving. What day besides Christmas is better than that. You eat a lot of delicious food, and see friends and family. But in a unique way, i always get emotional mentally on thanksgiving. My family has a lot of separation. My dad hasn’t seen his two brothers in about 5 years. There was a lot of complicated material happening that caused this, so Thanksgiving is just my two grandparents on my mothers side, and my older brother and sister. On thanksgiving i miss seeing my uncles and 6 cousins. I also miss my grandfather who lives in California with my aunt, uncle, and 4 of my 6 cousins. On thanksgiving, i feel i always bond with my brother the most. We always have been close, and i can ensure our relationship will last strong the rest of our lives. The next part that always gets me emotional is that i have all this delicious food in front of me, but most people in the world have nothing. I always have a spiritual connection and thank God for blessing me. Thanksgiving is called Thanksgiving for a reason. On that day we are supposed to give thanks, and be greatful for everything, no matter what condition we are in.

So Thanksgiving is a time of thanks, and me and my family always give our thanks (I hope you do also), and one year one of my uncles decided that he was going to say thanks to something special. So everyone at the table was giving their thanks, and my uncles decided it was finally time he should share it (these were his almost exact words.) “I would like to give thanks that the bunnies are okay.” Then everyone started to laugh their heads off because it was so unexpected and funny. That was my most memorable thanksgiving story.

Like many other families mine is not 100% normal. It’s not because of what they think of others, we all get along fine it’s just what we say that separates us from other families. In our past Thanksgivings we always celebrate it at my Aunt Karen’s house we all gather in the living room, tables stretched across the room covered in food. We all gather around the table saying the stereotypical things we are thankful for after about five people say “I’m thankful for friends and family” my Aunt Judy yells “you suck at being thoughtful” we all have to start actually thinking about hat we are thankful are.

I am very excitited for this upcoming thanksgiving because I can see my family, my friends and my cousins. Our plans are to spend Thanksgiving at my Aunt’s house. She lives in Hawthorn Woods country club. Their house is really big and nice and they live on a golf course. They live on the 5th hole and the overlook a lake. My four little cousins will be there. Their ages range from 5 to 8. WE usually play video games like Xbox and WII. WE also go on the golf course and play the fifth hole and just mess around out there. They also have a very fast scooter. It goes about 15 mph and we race around because they have four of them. We also play basketball. I am also looking forward for all of the food that my family makes. Some of the things that they make are ham, really good cheesy potatoes and a lot of turkey.

Every year my family and I go to my Aunt Caron and Uncle Bill’s house for Thanksgiving. All of my relatives are invited. I just wish that two of them could be left off the list, that is if they are even invited. But every year hey show up. Their names are Bill and Mary. Bill has always freaked me out. He is super tall, super skinny and reminds me of a skeleton. He was wiry, white old man hair and wears glasses. Also Bill stands way to close to people when he is talking to them and on top of that he has bad breath. Mary is the complete opposite. She is really short and chubby. She has dark brown hair and she never stops talking. She yells out to anyone that will listen. From all the way across the room, I just hear her yapping away. But the most weird thing of all is that they are there. I don’t know if my aunt invites them or if they just kind of show up. I just wish that they would stay away and not come the Thanksgiving.

Every Thanksgiving we have an soccer game with all of my dads side of the family. we get up at nine and have the game at about ten. For the past five years we have had different weather at elawa farms. The first year we had a perfect year. No clouds sunny and not too chilly. Then the second year came around. It was a complete disaster the field was full of mud. We were about to cancel the game, but I ran into the center of the field and completely soaked my self with mud. Then I went around dragging people in the mud and getting them all dirty. The game finally started when my dad used the mud as war paint and said “let the game begin” and that’s when I threw the soccer ball into the middle of the field and we began to play. The third year it was a snowfest. It was very hard to kick the ball up the field. Last year was the worst because it was pouring rain and wouldn’t stop raining until ten minutes after we left.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that I look forward to, not because of the large variety of food, but because it’s a good time to catch up with my extended family and the relatives that I don’t get to see very often. I say that I don’t look forward to the food at Thanksgiving dinner because I’m a vegetarian. I don’t like to be a high-maintenance person, and I don’t feel good about myself when my relatives go out of their way to make myself comfortable by cooking non-meat options for dinner. It’s a nice gesture, but I don’t want to cause any trouble. I do admit that I feel left out when the turkey is mentioned, but I’d rather do anything than eat that stuff, knowing where it came from. No offense to the turkey. Instead of meat, I go for the mashed-potatoes or the green beans, food that I feel relaxed around. Before our dinner each year, our extended family arrives at a nearby football field for a friendly family football game between my mom’s side of the family and my dad’s side. I don’t usually get competitive during sports, but the game is still fun.

I agree Tommy. I do also sometimes question where the food came from. I also feel the same way. Everyone in my family is getting older, yet they still do their best to make us happy. But it's not really about the food, it's who you're eating it with.

In my family, we don’t really have any big traditions for Thanksgiving but we have a lot of little ones. We host a meal at our house every year and my grandparents always come over. The days leading up to Thanksgiving are the craziest because we are trying to get so many things done. We need to clean the house and get the guest room ready for my grand parents. Then the hardest and longest part is preparing the food.
Kiefer S

Every family has special thanksgiving traditions. In my family we have a couple of odd ones and we also have some more common ones. One of the odd ones is that after we eat dinner we play bingo for 4 hours and every member of the family has to bring 1 prize of 10$ or more. We like to celebrate with my dad’s family and it is usually at our house or my aunt Suzie’s house. Another tradition we have is my dad likes to make mash potatoes for our big Thanksgiving dinner and they are really good. He takes about 4 hours to perfect them and he makes enough to last us until Christmas. The most common tradition we have is we usually play family football. The other side of the family is a lot older than us and they all played football at the high school so it is kind of scary. This year won’t be the best year for Thanksgiving because one of my cousins is in Barcelona for a simister and his siblings are flying out to celebrate Thanksgiving with him. Although we won’t be able to play football in the morning with our cousins we will still have a great Thanksgiving and I can’t wait for it to come around again.

The three things I look forward to, Food and lots of it, My videogames, and No school. After all I have done first trimester is over VICTORY so happy that school is done... for about a week. Always like going to grandparents house because I get to eat good food. And this time I go I get to bring my video games. So excited I can’t wait. The car rides are never fun. Sisters yelling, getting car sick, eating MCD’s or Culvers, man you're living the life. Good food and you're just on your way up there. When I get there I will greet my grand parents then immediately hook up my PS3 to their TV and get on and play some black ops ll. The food is the best by far. Having turkey and 20 other food choices. Mmmm delicious, and it all taste good. It never taste bad. (unless its burned) Its a short period of time with my grand parents. I usually see them about 20 times each year. While I see my other grandparents 2-3 times a year. Personally seeing \ of my grandparents is fine by me. It is always fun in the holidays.

My favorite holiday memory is when I go downtown chicago with my family, the day after Thanksgiving. Some fun things we do at the city is go see the windows at Macy’s. Last year downtown Chicago, the theme of the windows was “believe”. The windows were really good because I liked how they had moving parts in it that went along with the story. It takes awhile to get through the windows because my grandma comes with us, and she can’t look at the next window until she notices every single detail about the one before. When we finally get in Macy’s, there’s decorations everywhere! Streamers hanging from the ceiling, ornaments all over the place, and ribbons and bows. We always go and see the big tree in the middle of the walnut room. This year, it was bigger than before! It reached all the way up to the ceiling and was decorated in so many ornaments and had so many presents under the tree. I’ll always look forward to going to the city each year and seeing what the big tree will look like.

Everybody has that one holiday you will never forget no matter how hard you try. Whether it is good or bad everyone has their story. Mine starts off like this it was about 5 AM on Christmas morning and i was at 9 years of age. I was very into skateboarding at the time all i wanted was a skateboarding ramp I would do anything for it this is what i told my self at least. For months i had put all my spare time into trying to build a ramp with the help from my dad. I had succeeded at one time but before i knew it it had broke. My heart was racing as my feet guided me towards the living room awaiting my arrival. My mom for some reason was already up and i was surprised because i was always the first one up. But i was happy because i could open my presents. And then i saw my mom’s big smile i checked around the room. And there it was! I couldn’t hold back I attacked it as if it was alive and i was giving it a big hug. I quickly started to rip the present wrap from the box but my mom quickly killed the jolt of energy by reminding me i had to wait till my brothers had woke up. After about 30 minutes of patiently waiting. My brothers have finally woke up and i was shredding through that box as fast as i could after i had opened it and seen all the parts i knew i could not acomplish this task on my own. My mom had then told me that we could have the house cleaners try and help us assemble the ramp and that they did do. I tried my hardest to help but there was a lot of things that confused. About two days after the ramp was assembled and fully in use by me. I loved it and thank you mom for a great christmas.

At every thanksgiving we have turkey. And with Turkey you need gravy. At all of our thanksgivings we had gravy, it was warm, buttery and thick, and was the perfect topping to multiple foods at thanksgiving. However, on one thanksgiving in 2009 we had forgot the gravy. It felt so incomplete and we couldn't start the giant dinner without making the gravy. To make up for the time that we had lost my dad and I made about 2 liters of gravy. We finished the dinner eventually and we had enough gravy to last every dinner for 2 weeks

I love gravy, but really? 2 Liters, and you put it on your cranberry sauce.

Holidays, they’re all too much work. I mean seriously you spend a week of non-stop cooking and shopping. Then when the day comes the house fills with chatter. No silence, no peace, every room filled with people. Happiness? How about stress! Keeping everyone in check and making sure the kids aren’t drinking anything they shouldn’t. Worrying about the delicate decorations and more. It’s terrible sure there’s laughter and maybe cheer but in the end all there’s left is a big huge mess!

My favorite holiday is Christmas because I love the festive mood everyone is in, and the joyful music that plays on the radio and it really makes you happier. You also get to give and receive gifts from family members that they will enjoy, and it makes everyone happy to get something on Christmas. Also Christmas break is long, so that means no school!

My family is not big on Christmas because my mom works in the marketing department and starts living Christmas in June. We use Chirstmas time as a time to catch up on sleep and give people stupid gifts like animals that poop jelly beans. We aren’t very religious either. We sit around and sleep and then my parents go back to work if we don’t go on the rare vacation. My family is more of the new years type. We go to someones house, chill, party, and then go home. One christmas my family tried to be festive and we failed miserably. One week after we got the tree we stopped picking up the needles we just stopped trying and sat around and looked at each other, “Thinking what have we done?”

Every holiday brings a family together. My family is really big, and we always have a great time. You get to eat all you want till’ theres no more food left on your plate, then you go for seconds, thirds, fourths and so on. My family is all sweet and fun at the beginning, then at the end lets just say they're a little cooky. We watch football on Thanksgiving, and have Grab Bags on Christmas. Each holiday we have a great time with each other as a family, but we have drama just like any other. But when we each leave there’s hugs and kisses every step you take. “Good-Bye drive safe!”

A few years ago all the adults in my family got together and made a plan: The ENTIRE family is going to South Carolina to surprise Grammy and Papa for Thanksgiving. Well mostly my crazy aunt came up with this idea. See every time our whole family goes on a vacation, my crazy aunt manages to get hurt, get sick, get lost, do something that makes the rest of the family stop what we were doing, and help her. Before we left for South Carolina my mom told me that this trip would be different, I didn’t believe her something bad was bound to happen. But I got ready to get on the plane and fly to South Carolina. When we landed we got a bunch of cars and drove to Dataw Island, where my grandparents live. Then came the fun part my other aunt brought turkey hats for everyone. We put the hats on and my cousin went to knock on the door while everyone hid around the house. My Grammy came to the door and was super surprised she almost started crying. We all popped out and screamed “HAPPY THANKSGIVING GRAMMY!!” I’m going back to South Carolina this year for Thanksgiving, my grandma calls everyday and tells me how excited she is for us to come. I can’t wait to see her again.

I can’t think of a better time for food: Thanksgiving. I sometimes intentionally starve myself the day before just to eat more food at the actual meeting itself, but I also cannot think of anything more boring than one of our ‘family meetings.’ All we ever do is watch a Bears game and eat bagels with peanut butter. Then comes the family meal, the most awkward part about Thanksgiving for the Grulkes, (my mom’s side). We all say grace and then eat, in complete silence. I’ve never heard anyone ever say a word during the meal before besides, “pass the turkey,” or something like that. Then after the meal, we all say grace again and go watch more of the of the bears game. After they lose we all go home and prepare for the next Thanksgiving. Except my parents aren’t done with me yet. They make me carry all the leftover food from the meal, mostly gallons potato salad, into the car and when I get home I have to put all of it in little tiny jars. I sometimes spend up to two hours on this mindless task. It depends on how ‘people in Africa don’t throw away food’ they feel that day.

Thanksgiving something that brings the family together. in my family we always go to my aunts house on my dad’s side. i love this idea because in their basement they have a 90 inch TV ,surround sound, Xbox, PS3, and the classic Nintendo 64. i’m not a big gamer but this is what i like to call my escape to the digital world. Another game they have is ping pong which we do a boys game of sting pong. sting pong is if you lose a game to three you have to lift up your shirt and your oppenent gets to hit the ball at you as hard as they can

The christmas I robbed. I was in 6th grade. My uncle decided to stay back and clean up all the wrapping paper, when we went to Egg Harbor. We were out of the house for about an hour or so. My aunt and mom get a text from my uncle saying that he has to go and grab something from my grandparents house.

My Real family tradition is I hunt down turkey eat that bad boy raw, the blood is cranberry sauce, the feathers are stuffing. Then I just scarf the turkey like there’s no tomorrow. Once the turkeys done we put the youngest child in the carcass of the Turkey until Black Friday is over with.

my thanksgiving is a fun thanksgiving at my dads house. My dad usually as a party on thanksgiving which is always fun. first my dad watches football. When we are finished I go outside and longboard, call friends or sleep. When people start to show up(that I know) I say hi, and I start hanging out with them. Than when it is time to eat, I completely devour the mashed potatoes, and eat some turkey. When I finish I usually go in the house(where no one is) and watch funny youtube videos. when everyone leaves, I say "goodbye, thank you for coming", in a smile, to look like that was the only thing I wanted to do. Than I go inside, eat some pie, watch a movie, eat some more, drink some water, and fall asleep on the couch feeling amazing. The end. Comments are closed.
